Manteca, San Joaquin County
Manteca got its name by accident. Residents asked the railroad to call the station Monteca, but the name was printed as Manteca, the Spanish word for lard, and it stuck. Joshua Cowell settled the area in 1861, and the city incorporated in 1918. Farms around town grow a large share of the pumpkins sold in California, celebrated at a fair each October.
